What does the Written Exercise involve?

In the written exercise, you will be asked to assume the role of a police constable and will need to complete an urgent written task for your line manager. You’ll be given four pieces of information to help you with this task.

The exercise is designed to assess you against the following competencies and values from the Competency & Values Framework that are important for police constables:

Core values:

  • Impartiality

Competencies:

  • We analyse critically
  • We deliver, support and inspire
  • We are collaborative

What to expect

The exercise should take approximately 40 minutes to complete, but we’ve set a time limit of 120 minutes (two hours) so you don't have to rush things. Just make sure you don't let the time run out, because if you do, your response won’t be submitted. Please note, the timings may vary if you have any reasonable adjustments.

What you’ll need

For this stage of the online assessment, you’ll need a laptop, desktop computer or tablet with a strong internet connection. Before starting, check to see if you have the latest version of your chosen internet browser installed. Please check the online assessment process candidate guidance document to see further technical guidance and recommended browsers for the best experience.

Getting your results

You’ll find out if you’ve passed the online assessment at a later date. Your recruiting force will provide you with information about how and when you’ll receive your results.

Reasonable adjustments and accommodations

If you have any condition that might cause you to be disadvantaged during the online assessment process, temporary or otherwise (for example pregnancy, injury, medical conditions, disability or neurodivergence such as dyslexia and autism) you may be entitled to an accommodation or reasonable adjustment.
